Charter schools in Arkansas are public schools that offer more flexibility in their educational programs. They are tuition-free and open to all residents, but they operate under a performance contract that defines their mission, goals, and methods.

There are two types of charter schools in Arkansas:

  1. Open-Enrollment Charter Schools – These are available to all Arkansas residents, regardless of their district.
  2. District Conversion Charter Schools – These schools were once traditional public schools and are limited to students within the district.

Charter schools often use a lottery system for enrollment if demand exceeds capacity. While open-enrollment charter schools don’t require a school choice application, district conversion charter schools do.
